Advertorial
I've always had this unseen relationship with art. Since young, my little self would always be inclined to fine art, dance and linguistics as compared to other subjects. When my parents asked me if I wanted to attend dance or art classes, I was stuck. Well, for the love of God, I was 3. I didn't know better. I wanted both, but I chose dance instead - something that brought so much color in my life. Something that brought great joy to my late-mother. Art classes were on the same level as my dance studios and I would always quietly sneak a peek into those freshly polished glass doors, envious of the kids who were having so much fun with their hands (and sometimes, faces) smeared in a rainbow of paint. Aaaaaahhh...After dancing for over 10 years, I decided to stop and concentrate on mainstream education - which eventually led me to completing secondary school (high school), 2 business/marketing diplomas and double bachelor degrees in communications studies. Meeting various lecturers in my degree course, learning about both foreign and local arts culture, opened my eyes to what art really is.
And that sort of placed things into perspective for me. I knew that I didn't want to do ANYTHING related to math or science. Most of my friends ventured into doing banking and finance but hell no, I hated accounting and didn't foresee myself juggling numbers for the rest of my life. I took on a different path from my peers, and I'm not afraid to say this but I actually dropped out of school a couple of times while finding my direction. It was really really tough, and there were so many times that I thought that I should give up and settle for some random administration job. I'm glad I didn't conform to societal standards, and just blindly follow the paths of my peers.
I've had the opportunity to share with budding young talents about how I ventured (actually, stumbled is a better word) into styling. I encourage my younger cousins to pursue their passions, no matter how unconventional their interests may be - hey there is always a job for your passion (or related to it)! Thats what I've always emphasized in this space - have faith and go for your passion. If you work hard enough, and seize every opportunity (regardless big or small, it doesn't matter) that might potentially lead you to what you're seeking for - passion WILL pay off.
In 2012, Wilson and I were scouted and invited to shoot a short visual series for Lomography SG, titled
The Madman and the Dreamer, which was exhibited sometime last year.
I love Art - be it was fine art, music, dance, photography or styling. And who knows that I have stumbled into a trade that embodies most of my passion? I've never expected to get paid well for doing what I'm doing now. Many people have asked me "eh Auds, why are you so creative ah?" And it baffles me. Its like asking an accountant about reasons why he/she is good at numbers, or asking a salesman about why he/she is such a people-person. It's actually very simple.
Well, art can mean different things to different people. To me, its a lifestyle that engulfs my waking hours. In the things I read, watch, listen to, the exhibitions and events that I attend, the people whom I'm attracted to etc
Art can also encompass many areas such as fine art, graphic design, animations, music, theatre, dance, photography and more!
I am lucky to have met very helpful and dedicated individuals/mentors in my line of work, who taught me the ropes and guided me along as I fumbled (a lot) at the start. If you are lost about a concrete direction to head to, it is always great idea to have mentor to look up to and question about the industry and so forth. I would be so damn lost if I did not meet all the people I have met during my learning journey. Grab this opportunity to interact on a personal level with renowned names and personalities!
Note that mentorship application closes 9th February 2014.
